Tune of the Day: China Aster's "Not a Holiday"
China Aster, the London-via-Guernsey synthy art-pop soloist also known as Josh Moore, has released a driving new track titled "Not a Holiday," and it's our tune of the day for good reason. This song is a sonic delight, described by Louder Than War as "stuffed with pop hooks, ’80s synths, cut glass vocals and lyrical wit," while When the Horn Blows praises it for transporting listeners to "an other-worldly discotheque."
"Not a Holiday" is an eclectic mix of melodic, jangly guitars, propulsive percussion, and classic art-pop references. The track evokes the spirit of David Bowie with flanged pianos and channels the dad-rock guitars reminiscent of Kirin J Callinan. Moore’s passionate vocals, combined with his humorous and contemplative lyrics, make for a deeply melodic and instantly memorable listening experience, as highlighted by The Most Radicalist.
The song explores the complex relationship between the concepts of home and holiday, capturing the impossibility of ever truly feeling at ease in either state. Moore eloquently explains, "The idea of ‘home’ is only meaningful if there is an outside, real or imagined. Likewise, holidays seem equally impossible without the burdens, routines and dramas of home playing on your mind."
Accompanied by a DIY music video featuring Moore navigating Brighton on a surreal, sci-fi-infused business trip, "Not a Holiday" is a visually and sonically engaging piece. Co-produced by Oliver Marson and mixed by Joshua Rumble, the track is a testament to Moore's ability to blend art and pop seamlessly.
China Aster’s music is a campaign for lucid daydreaming, exploring hope and optimism through political action and science fiction. Drawing inspiration from contemporary art-pop influences like John Maus, MGMT, and Grimes, as well as classic ’80s artists such as The Style Council, Cocteau Twins, and Talking Heads, Moore creates a unique and compelling soundscape.
"Not a Holiday" by China Aster is available for streaming from 20th August 2024. Be sure to check it out and immerse yourself in the art-pop brilliance of China Aster.
