Tracks That Shaped My Sound: Ruby J

We spoke with Rising guitarist and songwriter Ruby J who has built a name for herself with support slots for everyone from Tony Hadley to The Lathums, and will kick things up to another gear by supporting British pop-rock institutions later this year. She’s also got more than 40,000 followers on Tiktok. She shared with us the tracks that have shaped her sound, enjoy!

St. Paul & The Broken Bones - Call Me

I recently discovered st.Paul & the broken bones and remember being shocked by the fact that there were a modern band as their sound echo’s all aspects of classic soul records and was amazed by the voice that drove the tune. I’m a huge fan of this genre of music and it’s always had an influence in my music in some sort of way, especially my latest project. This track has such a brilliant vintage sound and brass section which inspired me to replicate a similar sound whilst making it unique to me.

Otis Redding - Love Man

This tack is one of My favourite otis redding tunes. He’s been a big inspiration to me as an artist. His voice resonates with me. I love the way his music  can make me want to either dance or cry wether it be a beautiful ballad with a voice full of soul or a classic Motown song that just made you want to dance like this song does. His music is timeless and it’s something I aim to do with my own.

Valerie June - Wanna Be On Your Mind

Valerie June is one of my favourite female musicians. This record is also one of favourites! I’ve always been a fan of her unique voice accompanied by brilliant production. She works closely with the black keys another band I’m a huge fan of and influenced by. When I listen to her music it always inspires me to write.

Big Mama Thornton - i smell a rat

Big mama Thortan is everything I love about the blues, she was one of the best blues singers & players during that time and still remains one of the best. This track is one of my favourites of hers. I always come back to her for inspiration or when I feel I need something to remind me of my love for music and the blues is always able to do that.
