ROMM: The North-East's New Voice of Pop and R&B

Emerging from the North-East of England, ROMM is a rising star in the pop and R&B scene. With poignant and heartfelt lyrics, she draws listeners into her world, exploring the intricacies of modern relationships and personal experiences. Although just beginning her music career, ROMM has already made waves with local audiences and caught the attention of both the press and BBC Introducing. Her emotive storytelling and relatable themes set her apart as an artist to watch.

Norah Jones - Sunrise

This is one of my favourite songs. The innocence and simplicity of Nora’s voice and lyrics, I think, are qualities that HOME encapsulates as well. Nora’s voice is so nostalgic for me—she’s one of my parents' favourites. The lyrics are stripped back and transparent, making me feel cosy, like being at home on a rainy day with family and friends.

I’m sure not one soul singer can talk about their musical influences without mentioning Sade. She was probably my first introduction to soul music. Her sound is timeless and classy. This song, in particular, is one of my favourites. The reason being, it’s about love - I love how she writes her lyrics. She’s mysterious. You’re not sure what kind of love it refers to, but that’s why I like it. It could be about friends, family, or people close to her.

Jessie is a big inspiration. I love her sound; the production and overall feel of her music is fantastic. She’s like my role model when it comes to the kind of music I want to make going forward. Her sound is fresh and modern. I frequently use her music as a reference when producing my tracks with my sound engineer.

Dido is such a throwback. I can remember my mum playing her album all the time in the car. There’s no way I couldn’t mention her. I really think she’s shaped the way I make my music. Her sound is mellow, but it’s not sad by any means. Especially with ‘Thank You,’ it’s uplifting and celebrates the simple things in life, much like my newest release, ‘HOME.’

Alicia Keys - Love Looks Better (Official Video)Last but not least, Alicia is an icon, and I’ve been listening to her since I was about 11. Vocally, she’s probably my biggest inspiration. I love the power, emotion and confidence in her voice. I also appreciate her versatility—she can do it all, from big ballads to more upbeat bops. I aim to be versatile in my own music as well. It’s important to push boundaries and try new things with my sound.
