Self-written and produced by SAMETIME, the track is a razor-sharp take on modern dating culture, wrapped in shimmering pop production and Lily’s signature lyrical honesty. With over 600,000 streams, Spotify editorial love, and sold-out headline shows under her belt, Lily’s star is rising fast – and she’s inviting fans along for the ride with a special activation event in London on April 12th. Think vulnerability meets power, heartbreak with a wink, and songs that hit where it hurts (in the best way).
1.‘Sunny Side Up’ really captures that emotional limbo so many people feel in today’s dating culture. How did your own experiences and conversations shape the lyrics, and what was the turning point that made you want to write this track?
I think Sunny Side Up came from noticing how common causal relationships and situationships have become, not just in my own life, but all around me, with friends too. Casual can be really fun and work for so many people, but I’ve also noticed that there’s a weird pressure not to seem “too much” or “too clingy” if you do want to ask where you stand or actually ask for more.
With social media and dating apps, everyone’s constantly exposed to so many “options,” so a lot of people avoid labels or commitment altogether. Which is fair enough, but it also means more and more of us end up stuck in this awkward limbo stage, not knowing what’s okay to say or ask for. That’s really where the song came from because I feel like so many of us stay in this grey area with the hopes that the other person will one day turn around and want to commit to you.
2. You’ve talked about the pressure on women to be the “cool girl” in relationships — how do you hope this song resonates with young women navigating those blurred lines between casual and committed?
I think for women in particular, there’s this constant pressure to be the “cool girl”, free flowing and not controlling - probably because we’ve notoriously been labelled as “too emotional” or “crazy” for just having feelings. So now, a lot of us pretend nothing bothers us, even when we’re low-key spiraling (me).
I hope this song resonates with anyone who’s been in that blurry in-between stage and makes them feel seen. Like, you’re not crazy for wanting clarity. I also hope it gives people the little push to stop settling for being “just friends” if that’s not what they truly want. If staying casual works for you, amazing! But if you want more, you 100% deserve someone who’s all in for you <3
3. The production on ‘Sunny Side Up’ strikes a delicate balance between soft-pop warmth and emotional weight — how was it working with SAMETIME on bringing the track to life sonically?
The SAMETIME boys, Sam and Tim, are honestly some of the funniest, most talented, and patient people I’ve ever worked with. Sunny Side Up was actually one of the first tracks we did together, and from the start, we really clicked. We became real friends super quickly, which I think always helps creatively—it’s way easier to open up and be honest when you feel comfortable.
They really got my vision for the song, but (bless them) were also down to experiment and pivot when I wanted to change things… not once, not twice, but three times. Classic me being a perfectionist (virgo). It started off in more of a grungy space, then turned into a ballad, and finally landed where it is now—with that soft, stripped-back start that builds into this warm, full soft-pop moment. They absolutely nailed it. We also had the funniest time recording the gang vocals at the end, so listen out for them :)
4. You’re steadily building a powerful presence — 600k+ streams, sold-out shows, BBC Introducing support, Spotify playlists. What’s been the most surreal or grounding moment in your journey so far?
One of the most surreal moments for me so far was actually in a pub bathroom. I was with a friend, (after a few drinks) we started singing one of my songs, and the girl in the cubicle next to us joined in. She knew every single word. I’d never met her before, and it just blew my mind. That moment made me feel like my music was actually reaching people in a real way. Shoutout to that girl, you made my entire year.
Other than that, it’s the little things that hit me daily, like fans messaging me about how excited they are for new music, or telling me they’re proud of me. They make edits, videos, collages of us together and it honestly means the world and seriously is what keeps me going.
5. You’ve got a fan activation coming up in London on April 12th — can you tell us what fans can expect and why connecting with your audience IRL is so important to you?
I’m so excited, it’s my first ever fan hangout! We’re doing bracelet making and brunch, which is very on-brand for ‘sunny side up’. Meeting fans in person is honestly the best part, getting to hug, chat, take pictures, and just connect properly.
Bracelets have sort of become a tradition at my shows and such a cute part of the lilyonaires, so I thought it would be perfect to make that the focus. I also had so much fun picking out the beads, I genuinely love this kind of thing. We’ll also have a little sing song too, I can’t wait to see how many lyrics everyone’s learned in 48 hours!
These moments mean so much to me, my fans support me endlessly, so it’s important I show them I truly care and want to spend real time with them, I wouldn’t be here without them!
