Introducing: Twin Skeletons

1. Your new track, “You & Me,” is described as your heaviest song yet, blending raw power with emotional depth. Can you take us through the writing and recording process? What inspired this shift in sound?

This song actually started out with a very soft and melodic Radiohead-esque demo that Fred has on his phone which ended up heavily influencing the verses. From there we pieced it together with the chorus which we wanted to sound super wide and big. The breakdown came from James messing around with his octave pedal and was a bit of a joke to begin with but we quickly fell in love with it. The song came together in a day, which is the quickest we’ve ever written a song. We recorded it not long after and it didn’t take long for us to get it to a point sonically that we were all very happy with.

I think as a band our influences have diversified massively since we first started playing together – we listen to the softest of soft and the heaviest of heavy now, and I think that comes across in You & Me quite a lot with the blend of softer melodic verses with a super heavy dissonant breakdown. Bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Spiritbox and Knife Bride definitely inspired both the writing and production.

2. You’ve had a huge year—headline and support tours, high-scoring reviews, and major radio play on BBC Introducing and Radio 1. How has this momentum influenced your approach to making music?

We’re very lucky and grateful for all the love we have received and the opportunities we have had thus far. Being played on the radio adds a new perspective of how we need to write songs to grab people’s attention instantly particularly at the stage of our careers that we are. Equally, sometimes we miss out, some radios that we target don’t play us, and that helps us to reflect on how we can make sure whoever is listening, radio host or not, will instantly be drawn to our music. Playing live also allows you to reflect on what your set might be missing, and by the looks of it, we were missing some heavy!

3. The song explores the pain of idolizing the wrong person in a relationship. How did you channel those emotions into the lyrics and instrumentals? Were there any personal experiences that shaped the track?

We think the lyrics speak for themselves and it’s more than likely the majority of people will understand the place that this is coming from, as we’ve all had our fair share of shitty relationships! The verses are soft and vulnerable but as the song builds Phoebe’s vocals become more and more powerful, as does the music surrounding it, channelling the upset into something more aggressive and powerful.

4. You’ve been compared to a mix of Boston Manor and Spiritbox, but your sound feels uniquely your own. How do you balance your influences with carving out something fresh in the heavy music scene?

Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where everything comes from, some things we probably don’t even realise have been influenced by certain bands. While our influences are diverse there is still a lot of crossover, but I think the sound comes naturally with the way we play our instruments. Phoebe’s vocals in particular add something completely unique and are easily distinguishable. Particularly in a landscape of largely male-dominated bands, this helps us to stand out from the rest.

5. With all the success you’ve built so far, what’s next for Twin Skeletons? Can we expect an album, more tour dates, or any surprises in 2025?

We have definitely got a few bits and bobs in the works at the moment which we can’t wait to share. More shows is definitely on the cards especially considering we had to cancel a few headlines around the release of this single due to an illness. Ultimately we’re still in a building phase, we’re building our foundations to get ready for bigger things. Next time you can catch us live will be May 11th in Bristol competing for a chance to play at Bloodstock Open Air but be sure to keep an eye out for some future headline shows we’re trying to plan and to watch this space as 2025 will be full of exciting content from us!
