Introducing: The Glass Hearts

Your debut single "Coupe deVille" was described as “the spark that lit the flame” for this EP. What was the moment that made you realize this song was the foundation for the whole record?

It was born out of a conversation between myself, Charlie (Lead Guitarist) and Andy Gannon. I had the song down on the acoustic guitar first and then all three of us got in the studio and vibed it really. We knew we wanted to make it upbeat with a chorus that even if you were blind drunk you can still sing the melody. It was the first song we knowingly recorded for the hearts. It’s got a charm to it that I felt inspired the rest of the tunes in those sessions.

The EP is packed with “no-nonsense” floor-fillers, yet the lyrics capture personal setbacks and struggles. How do you strike that balance between raw emotion and high-energy songwriting?

In terms of lyrics I’ve never shied away from digging deep. I went through a lot over a five year period before The Glass Hearts became a band. I think in those early demo sessions whilst I was in the writing process I used those life experiences to help me put what I was going through into the music. Without sounding cliche it was a way to put to bed how I felt but in a positive therapeutic way. Some songs are effortless. Some days I can just be sounding out an idea on my guitar, and the song writes itself. Some songs are a more thought out process and take more time. It all depends on what I’m feeling and the intention behind the music. These tunes are a timestamp on that part of my life. All my work is like that in a way.

You've worked with producers Andy Gannon and Rex Roulette, alongside features from Ash Sheehan. How did these collaborations shape the sound of ‘Coupe deVille’?

Andy is a great guy and brilliant producer. He brings the best melodies out of me and the studio’s sessions hands down were the most fun I’ve had. It felt easy and it was all based on vibes and volume. It felt like we were playing to a stadium every time we would track the vocals. Ash Sheehan I began working with before the hearts were a band. Ash in some ways was like a mentor to me in the early days and is a very close friend of the band. He played on all my other tunes and The Glass Hearts stuff. Through Ash we met Rex and we worked on Jeepers together down at Windy Ridge Studios in London. Rex brought out the inner T Rex vibe in us and helped me to adjust my voice to tailor the song which was a new thing for me. Rex and I are currently working on some new tunes together as well as co producing the new hearts EP too. Collectively they’ve taught me a lot and I feel like they’ve all unlocked some creative doors for me as a writer.

Your music has already been picked up by major radio stations in both the UK and US. How does it feel to see that kind of international recognition so early on?

Honestly amazing! Dean Jackson from BBC Introducing has been a big supporter of the band from day one. We’ve had some good support slots early on too with Miles Kane, Jamie Webster and more recently Thom from The Lottery Winners asked us to play on their album launch too. Stuff like that goes a long way for a band on their way up. So we massively appreciate all those guys and their support.

With the EP dropping June 7th and your upcoming show at The Rodeo Recommends, what can fans expect from The Glass Hearts live experience?

Rodeo is a mint show! We’ve got a great live band behind us so just continuing to do bigger and better shows really. The new tunes we’re working on have got a proper disco feel to them. We’ve started playing one or two of them live now and the shows have been going off!
