Introducing: SAJE

SAJE is UK-based artist and producer with roots in Zimbabwe, whose music defies boundaries and redefines genres. Blending Rap with the soulful textures of RnB, Jazz, and Gospel, SAJE crafts a sound that’s as unique as it is profound. Through introspective lyricism, he delves into themes of faith, identity, and the human experience, striking a chord that resonates deeply. A true multi-instrumentalist, SAJE’s relentless drive to push sonic limits is matched by his prowess as a producer, having collaborated with talents like Sophia Thakur, MANNY, and Lauren-Paige. Prepare to step into the world of an artist who doesn’t just make music—he creates moments.

Your music combines rap with elements of RnB, jazz, and gospel. How do these diverse influences come together to shape your unique sound?

"I feel like, each of these genres have played such an integral role in shaping my identity as a musician that the process of bringing them together is so subconscious. Things like the memorable melodies in RnB, the use of vocal harmony and layering in Gospel music and the freedom and willingness to experiment found in Jazz are all evident in my art. I tend to lean into each of these genres more or less, based on the needs of the song or project I'm working on, like if a chorus needs to feel 'bigger' or more impactful I might arrange a really churchy style vocal part, or if I want to take a bridge to weird place, I'll mess with chord progressions and lean more into the jazz thing."

Your lyrics delve into themes like faith, identity, and the human experience. How do your personal experiences and background influence the stories you tell through your music?

"Constantly. Honesty is a big part of my writing process and sharing my own experiences is the best way for that to come across in my music. I'm a story teller at heart, so I love the challenge and adventure of creating an original narrative but the truth remains that the best story I can tell is my own. One thing I've found, is that no matter how obscure and unique I might think my lived experience is, there is always someone out there who can relate in some way. That's what encourages me to keep pulling from my own life and background as much as I can, to create music that resonates on a personal level."

As a multi-instrumentalist, how do you approach the creative process when composing and producing your tracks?

You’ve collaborated with artists like Sophia Thakur, MANNY, and Lauren-Paige. What have you learned from these experiences, and how have they influenced your own artistry?

"For me, the production process takes many forms but it almost always starts outside the studio. For instance, I might start by humming a melody to myself throughout the day or hearing a song or sample that triggers an idea. When I'm in the studio I usually reach for my guitar first and lay down whatever chords or general song structure I have in mind. I'll often record temporary keys and bass parts after. These are temporary because I have amazing musician friends that I love collaborating with and I'm always looking to bring in new ideas from sources besides myself. I arrange all my instrumental elements with my vocals in mind, as by this point, I'll already have some idea of the themes of the song and how I'll deliver my lyrics."

You’ve collaborated with artists like Sophia Thakur, MANNY, and Lauren-Paige. What have you learned from these experiences, and how have they influenced your own artistry?

"Working with these amazing people has been an experience I'm really grateful for as it's allowed me to see their own creative processes, work ethic and passion for their art. This has definitely influenced my own approach and I've been able to take away so much from these collaborations."

What can fans expect from your upcoming projects, and how do you see your sound evolving in the future?

"I would say consistency. At this point in my life, I'm really focused on creating and sharing as much music as I can. I feel like as musicians, we almost have a duty to use and share the gift we've been giving. That's something I really tried to emphasise in my single, 'Calling My Name'. Sound wise, I want to push the boundaries, especially here in the UK. I want to show new ways of doing things, collaborate with different people and ultimately make a positive difference to the world in some way through my music."
