1. Your rise in the UK’s Drum & Bass/Jungle scene has been meteoric, especially since your Up and Comer Award in 2021. Can you tell us about the journey that led you to this point, and what drives your passion for these genres?
It’s been an incredible journey. My love for Jungle and Drum & Bass began before I could even walk—I had a unique upbringing, growing up fully immersed in the scene’s raw energy and vibrant culture, which became part of who I am. From my first performances, my goal was simple: to make people dance, have fun, and feel connected. Winning the Up and Comer Award was a huge milestone; it confirmed I was on the right path and fueled my drive to keep pushing forward. This music is in my everyday life, and having such amazing support from my fans is a constant source of inspiration. They’re a big part of why I keep evolving, experimenting, and working to bring something fresh to each set. I’ve also started producing music to share my own sound, and I’m excited to see where that journey takes me.
2. With a musical background influenced by your father, Nicky Blackmarket, how has his legacy shaped your approach to DJing and the way you connect with audiences?
Growing up, my Dad, Nicky Blackmarket, was my biggest musical inspiration. Through watching him DJ, I learned how much heart and dedication goes into connecting with an audience. His career showed me that being a DJ is more than just mixing tracks—it’s about sharing energy with people, reading the crowd, and creating moments that stay with them. He taught me to always be authentic and put my own spin on things. I definitely feel his influence in how I approach every set, making sure that I’m not only delivering the music but creating an experience for the crowd, which I think is so important.
Growing up immersed in oldskool Jungle and Drum & Bass has undoubtedly shaped my style. I love blending classic tracks with new sounds to create a vibrant mix of history and fresh energy, connecting with audiences of all ages. It’s my way of honoring the roots of the music while pushing it forward, keeping the spirit of Jungle and Drum & Bass alive for every generation.
3. You've performed on some iconic stages, from Glastonbury to international gigs in Canada and Germany. What has been the most memorable moment on stage so far, and how do you prepare for such high-energy sets?
Glastonbury was an absolutely surreal experience, especially playing b2b with my Dad at such an iconic festival—feeling that energy is a moment I’ll always cherish. The Canadian tour, was equally as special—it was a real family affair, with my Dad and I playing together and Foxy joining forces with his son, Foxx on the mic. The crowd was electric throughout the whole tour. That said, each show brings its own unique magic, no matter the size. I always feel a mad connection at the smaller events, where the vibe is more intimate. I put a lot of time into digging for fresh tracks to keep my sets feeling new and exciting. When I step on stage, the adrenaline takes over, and I just focus on connecting with the crowd and creating an unforgettable experience in that moment.
4. Your sets mix Drum & Bass, Jungle, jump up, and oldskool sounds in unique ways. How do you keep your style fresh and innovative, and what inspires the twists you bring to these classic genres?
I’m constantly exploring new music, always on the lookout for fresh sounds and remixes. My goal is to push the boundaries of Drum & Bass and Jungle while staying true to the roots. I love weaving in jump-up vibes and oldskool sounds to create that nostalgic energy, all while keeping it fresh and innovative. It’s about striking the right balance between honoring the genre's history and pushing it forward. I often experiment by blending unexpected elements that take the set in exciting, unpredictable directions—yet always stay true to the core energy of DnB and Jungle. This keeps the vibe exciting and engaging for both me and the crowd.
5. Between your residency at Kool FM, guest mixes on BBC Radio 1, and appearances at major festivals, what can fans expect next from DJ Millz? Any exciting projects or new music on the horizon?
I’m incredibly excited about what’s on the horizon! I’m currently working on a few collaborations, original tracks, and remixes that I can’t wait to share. My monthly residency at Kool FM, an institution to our music scene, has been an amazing platform to showcase my sound and connect with listeners, and I’m planning to bring even more exclusive mixes and guest appearances to the show. Fans can also expect to catch me on new stages, and international tours. Right now, my main focus is pushing my music further, exploring new sounds, and evolving as an artist, especially in terms of my production. I’m beyond grateful for the incredible support and can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!
