GREGSONEY- TRACKS THAT SHAPED OUR SOUND

Gregsoney is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Greg Powell, a dynamic artist from a small village straddling Stoke-on-Trent and Cheshire. With his unique brand of songwriting, Gregsoney captures the raw essence of navigating life as a twenty-something on the rise, blending fuzzy guitars, quirky synthesizers, infectious beats, and layers of vocal harmonies that defy genre conventions.

After sharing stages with the likes of Dylan Cartlidge, FLEUR ROUGE, Bathtub, and Foxa Riot, and making waves at Your City Festival and BBC Introducing Stoke, Gregsoney is poised for a thrilling 2024, armed with fresh material and even bigger live shows. Get ready for a sonic journey unlike any other!

Happy Mondays - Loose Fit

I’m a sucker for dissonant guitars and undeniable grooves and this track incapsulates both perfectly. It’s just got a kinda swagger to it - if you’re walking through Tesco with it on, it’s suddenly made your shop a whole lot cooler. ‘Unworthy’ locks in a similar groove, though my track is quite ballsy, not as ‘cool kids in the corner’ like this one mind.

Nirvana- In Bloom

What else can I say that hasn’t been said about this band, Nirvana were hugely influential to me growing up. Just the sound man, Butch Vig’s production on ‘Nevermind’ is timeless - those chorus-soaked guitars, air drum-able beats and angsty vocals. Not only that but the HOOKS! Nirvana were a pop band in disguise, every track is so catchy. I get told quite often my tracks stick in their heads; Nirvana are to blame for that.

Only Real has recently made a comeback after a long hiatus (something I tend to do a lot, this is the last time now haha) but his music was shown to me way back by my Dad. I remember coming back home from uni one time and we’d swap some new bands we’d been listening to and Only Real was one of his picks. His sound resonated with me immediately, the slacker vibes of Pavement with a modern sheen was right up my street!

Mannequin Pussy - I Don’t Know You

Wanted to throw a new band in the mix here, Mannequin Pussy. Their set at Glasto this year was top notch. They stick out a like sore thumb because they’re original and do their own thing - no tropes or gimmicks here, something I strive to do as Gregsoney. I spent a chunk of time in other bands making music for certain audiences and people pleasing in order to gain traction. I hated it. I want to make music I like and what I resonate with, and if people dig it - right on.

Faith No More - Midlife Crisis

Angel Dust, the album this song was taken from was one of the first CD’s I’d listened to as a kid. I remember plucking it out of my parents collection just because the cover looked cool. Now, they’re perhaps my favourite band of all time. 2 reasons, 1- they mash genres a lot but it still sounds cohesive. I myself can’t stick to just one sound, I love so many, so why not mix them together! And 2, Mike Patton their vocalist. He’s a huge inspiration to my vocal style, I like to put on a lot of voices and he’s the king of that. He’s dabbled in voice-over work for games and TV, which is something people say I should give a try! Maybe one day…
