Getting To Know: Sock Drawer

Emerging from the vibrant indie-alt-pop scene in Brighton, Sock Drawer, the self-proclaimed "tired pop" band, are making waves with their latest single, "Don't Have the Energy." A playful, laid-back jab at the industry's relentless demand for perfection, the track is drenched in wry humor and smooth synths. Fresh off their headline debut at Glastonbury’s Hive stage, the mysterious duo have teamed up with renowned producer James Dring (Gorillaz, Jamie T) for their debut album, due in 2025. Keep your expectations low, but the music quality? Sky-high.

1. "Don't Have the Energy" takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the pressures of making radio-ready hits. How did you come up with the idea for the song, and how does it reflect your overall attitude towards the music industry?

The way we write is pretty loose, we like to give ourselves one day record each new song demo. And then we just chip away at that to bring it up to scratch. It’s funny, though, because we secretly wish the algorithm would just spit us out as overnight megastars. We’re hypocrites like that. But yeah, the song’s kind of a wink at the industry—it’s a game we don’t really wanna play, but we do want to win. So we thought “let’s just have a laugh with it”

2. You describe your music as "tired pop," and there's a laid-back, almost effortless vibe to your sound. How do you balance that carefree style with the emotional depth that your tracks seem to carry?

Emotional depth? Easy. We’re unhinged.  Probably the most over-emotional laid-back people you’ll ever meet. Exhausted and overstimulated at the same time—that’s what our therapists tell us, anyway. So yeah, it just spills into the music naturally.

3. Fresh off your headline debut at Glastonbury’s Hive stage, how did that experience influence your creative process? Did performing at such a high-profile event impact how you approach live shows?

Glasto was unreal. The Hive Stage is run by some of the best people out there (Big up Jedd!) - nothing but love for them. As for the creative process, well, now we’re thinking bigger. Dancing robots for live shows are officially a must. And yeah, Pyramid Stage next year? Get ready, motherfuckers.

4. You’ve kept your identities and creative process closely guarded. How important is that sense of mystery to your artistic vision, and how does it influence the way fans connect with your music?

They say keep your creative process close and your identities even closer. Honestly, when people find out Sock Drawer is the secret project of Britney Spears and Liam Gallagher, it’s gonna blow their minds. You heard it here first... or maybe you didn’t. shhhh

5. Working with James Dring, known for his work with Gorillaz and Jamie T, must have been exciting. How has his involvement shaped the direction of your upcoming album, and what can fans expect from its release in 2025?

James is a legend. He’s got more synths than us for a start, and definitely more sense. The guy's a force of nature. The album’s gonna be special—expect beautiful chaos, lots of synths, and maybe a breakdown or two (mentally and musically). It’s 2025 baby, we’re going all in.
