Chy Deep: Tracks That Shaped Our Sound

We spoke to electronic duo chy deep. Based in London, the duo are mastering a sonic pallete of instrospective releases, that tap into that existential mind set we often feel trapped in, especially this time of the year. Their tracks are wholly cathartic and have become a mainstay in the BabyStep Studio. Whilst we love listening to them online, there is no doubt their discography is crafted for a live audience. We can't encourage you enough to check out their rich selection of tracks. We caught up with them about the tracks that shaped their sound, enjoy!

Even though this artist’s sound is nothing like mine—she leans more toward soul, neo-soul, and R&B—In Winter was inspired by Erykah Badu. I remember reading a quote from her years ago where she said you’ve got to be a cold mf in this industry'  because everyone else, especially the men, are cold too. That always stuck with me. This industry can be brutal, and sometimes you’ve got to say, “Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness” and match that energy.

It’s also a double entendre—I love my winter wardrobe. The line “I look good in winter” is really about saying, “Don’t take me for a fool. I’m colder than you.”

I chose her collaboration with Bonobo because he is one of my favourite producers of all time and the the TNB album changed my brain chemistry fr.

SKN DEEP

Fred again - places to be ft. Anderson Paak

I love any track that has a certain edge that you want to come back to experience again and again. Whether it’s through production style, lyrics, or melody. For me, it’s Fred’s skippy sharp drum patterns that are still simplistic yet infectious throughout. I wanted to explore this with In Winter using intentionally more dialed back drum patterns to create that ‘bedroom’ dance pop feel. In Winter focuses heavily on the concept rather than super intricate details.

Kenya Grace - Strangers

I love how Kenya approaches all of her music especially with Strangers, her laidback style and delivery is mastered. The simplistic, harmonious synths and pads let the lyrics shine through. Kenya has always been formulaic in creating music that sends you to that otherworldly way of feeling.

Doja Cat- Bottom Bitch

CHY -

Love Doja, been a fan of her since her early days, always loved her unapologetic attitude in this song and the Blink 182 sample is hard.
