BabyStep Contributes To Raffle For Local Charity football team after their Equipment Was Stolen

ONE COMMUNITY ONE GOAL” (Fund)Raising Spirits for Local Charity football team after they were stolen from.

For anyone in Leeds - be it students, families, or visitors – woodhouse moor is at the heart of Hyde Park. Pumping life and leisure into its surrounding households, the popular park has enabled grass-roots charity team, Leeds Hyde Park FC (LHPFC), to blossom.

Adel Chermiti, the welfare officer and chairman of the club, has been offering affordable sessions to children aged 4-12. With the tagline ‘One community, One goal’, Chermiti has truly scored a hatrick by combining the Leeds community, local universities, and a love for football. Adel is a friendly-face in the Leeds. During lockdown he ensured no child would go hungry by delivering food parcels to members of his teams; he was also featured on ITV news, picking up litter from woodhouse moor so it could remain safe for the children to play football.

In May 2021, LHPFC’s storage contained was broken into and £5000 worth of equipment was stolen. For a team that works hard to ensure sessions remain accessible to all, this was a catastrophic blow to the spirit of the club. Many reached out to donate on the GoFundMe page which is still active now:

In June 2020, Adel began the first women’s team, Leeds Hyde Park Women FC. The women in this open-age, all-ability team have fostered the spirit of Adel’s hard work and philanthropy, by organising a Female football tournament (approved by the FA). The tournament, which will take place on Thursday 24th June, has already raised just shy of £400 for the club.

LHPFC’s Women’s team reached out to local businesses who have kindly donated raffle prizes, including Josh Crowe, the founder here at BabyStep:

Most excitingly for the club, in the tragedy of losing such vital equipment, LHPFC have found themselves enriched by sponsors, donations and support from the Leeds community. Most notably, the club have found friendship with popular food and drinks venue, Hyde Park Book Club. The owner, Jack Simpson, has kindly donated prizes to the tournament winners, a free pint to all attending, and has offered to support the club in future endeavours through quarterly fundraisers throughout the year. This extremely generous offer will enable to women’s team to train safely and successfully during the winter periods when the unlit, sparse woodhouse moor would not be an option. Hyde Park Book Club and LHPFC not only share half of their name, but a full commitment to retaining a sense of community within Hyde park.

With thanks to anyone the has donated and shared our story.
