BabyStep Bandcamp Picks: Tañ

Following on from last week’s selection from Pussy Stamina, this week’s Bandcamp picks offers an exciting array of high-energy tracks from Spin City’s Tañ. Tanya is an artist that packs a punch in both her solo endeavours, and in the running of Leeds garage night Spin City, which showcases an eruptive arsenal of UKG, UK Funky, Jersey Club, Breakbeat, Ghetto House, Drill, and Afrobeats. Having recently played out Rinse Summer nights with Eliza Rose and Oneman, and releasing an explosive mix with Gimme a Break Records, her notable reputation in the scene is ever gaining momentum- all whilst completing an engineering degree. Tañ has plenty coming up, with mixes for Lobster Theremin, Rhythm Sister, Rinse and Balamii, so stay tuned. We wanted to tap into Tãn’s eclectic tastes, and see how she recommends you spend your hard earned quids during today’s Bandcamp Friday.

1. Gass The Club EP - Lost&Found, PJ Bridger

I’ve been rinsing their first release, Run Di Record, so I was excited when Berlin-based +98 came back with a new and brilliant EP. It didn’t disappoint, covering the darker sounds of speed garage and UKG plus an emotive bonus tune featuring some sampling of Akala.

2. Grief Into Rage: A Compilation for Beirut by Grief Into Rage

One of those compilations you could just sit and get lost in for hours. A staggering 36 piece strong collection of music all in aid of providing support to those affected by the devastating explosion in Beirut back in August. I couldn’t pick a favourite because they’re all amazing pieces of music from many very accomplished producers. Such a range of genres but expect plenty of beautiful Middle Eastern influences coming through.

3. Signs - Biome

As part of Madam X’s cat rescue journey over in Greece, Biome dug out three dubs to release on Kaizen to put towards the fundraising campaign to bring back the two most adorable ginger kittens. Signs is a heavy-hitting tune that definitely feels more suited to a dark club than my living room.

4. Mo's Eat the Two by TAH

A high energy Jersey Club vibe for this one from TAH on the iconic HAUS of ALTR label, because I just love a naughty vocal. I would highly recommend checking out the rest of the release for an excellent display of black creatives doing bits.

5. Late Tate Tale - E-Unity

The first release on Simo Cell’s TEMET Music Label is a release from E-Unity. Late Tate Tale is my top pick from the EP, with hard vocals and punchy percussion I can see this going off in the dance.

6. Sacred Heart - Nightwave

LA-based label SOS Music focusing on music from female and non-binary producers have released this incredibly varied compilation with proceeds going towards Transgender Law Centre, Downtown Women’s Shelter and Women’s Refugee Commission. Sacred Heart is a gorgeous footwork tune from Slovenian producer, Nightwave, with mesmerising vocals throughout.
